- "I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip. One!... Two!... he was counting" (Weisel 57). The represents Man Vs Man because Elie caught Idek messing around with a Polish girl and is now being punished for sticking his nose in other people's business.
- Man Vs Nature
- "My father had been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked" (Weisel 39). The represents Man Vs Self because Elie is asking himself why he didn't flinch or try to stop his dad from getting hit across his face.
- Man Vs Society
- There's no way the Russians will lose!

- I turned my act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest against Him" (Weisel 69). This represents Man Vs God because he is choosing not to fast because he no longer beliefs is by his side.
- "Pressed tightly against one another, in an effort to resist the cold, our heads empty and heavy, our brains a whirlwind of decaying memories" (Weisel 98). This is Man Vs Nature because it's cold outside and everyone is trying to bunch up to keep the warmth in and not freeze to death.
- "I had asked my father to sell everything, to liquidate everything, and to leave" (Weisel 9). The is Man Vs Society because nobody was worried about the Germans because everyone thought that the Russians would defeat the Germans.
