  • That's old Tim Johnson. What's he doing?
  • There's an old dog down yonder.
  • I don't know Scout. We better go home
  • Hurry in children.
  • Mr. Nathan, Mr. Arthur, mad dog's comin' ! Mad dog's comin' !
  • Jem and Scout were outside playing with the air-rifles. They were about 500 yards away from Radley's house.
  • Shoot the dog Atticus! Remember, you got one of the best shots!
  • I haven't shot a gun in thirty years-.
  • Scout tells Calpurnia that they saw a dog acting strange, and Calpurnia goes outside to investigate what Scout was talking about. When she sees the dog, she sternly orders the children to go into the house.

  • Calpurnia spreads word around the town and alerts everyone about the mad dog roaming in the neighborhood. Calpurnia cannot alert the Radley's about it inside their home, so she yells at them from their front door.

  • Atticus and Sheriff Tate arrive, after Calpurina warned the Radley;s about the mad dog. Sheriff Tate insists that Atticus should shoot the dog, but Atticus hesitates to agree.
  • Atticus takes the gun, aims it, and he shoots the dog after contemplating for a few moments.
  • Miss Maudie explains to Jem that back then, Atticuc was known as "One-Shot-Finch." He earned that nickname for having the best shot of the town. But she adds that Atticus has a compassion for the disadvantaged and vulnerable, which is why he was not proud of his talent.
