- the personification of the unseen monolithic leader of the Party of Oceania -- Big Brother is not only a symbol for the leader of the Party, but also of the surveillance and control that completely engulfs Oceania. Winston and all other citizens of Oceania are constantly shown Big Brother in order to be reminded that they are being watched at all times, therefore discouraging anyone from doing anything against the Party's standards. -- "Big Brother watches over Winston and all other citizens of Oceania not in a loving manner, but a suspicious and accusatory one."
- mode of communication used to manipulate or influence the opinion of groups to support a particular cause or belief -- Propaganda is very prevalent in 1984 because it is how the Party keeps Oceania in check. Propaganda is found in the schooling system, festivities, work, and daily activities in order to convince all citizens that the Party is good and all against it are pure evil. -- "The Party utilizes propaganda to create loyal citizens and soldiers from birth to death."
- someone who has been expunged by the state, someone of whom all trace has been erased -- Unpersons are not only arrested by the Party, but their entire contribution to the world is also erased in order to maintain the order the Party wants. Their lives become as insignificant as if they were never born at all. -- "Even though she was originally a great asset to the Party, she eventually was arrested and became an unperson, never to be heard of or from again."
