There was once a Coyote, put on Earth by Old Man Above, who traveled the world. He went from place to place and did many great things as he went along.
we have to save him again????
Coyote created the Indians and placed them in tribes all over the world because his maker wanted the whole Earth to be inhabited. He even killed monsters and evil spirits that preyed on people.
I am Great Spirit and I have come down on Earth to let you know your work here is done
Coyote gave names to each and every person he put on the Earth. He took time to teach them all how to speak different languages as well. This explains why Indians live all over the country and speak many different languages.
Though Coyote was wise and powerful, he was a trickster and made many mistakes. In fact he had himself killed many times. The birds and fox got tired of bringing him back to life.
Despite his troubles and mistakes, Coyote got all his work on Earth done. Old Man saw him traveling along, looking for something to do and realized his work was done. He travels down in the form of an old man and presents himself to Coyote. He proves who he is by moving the lake back in front of the mountain. He tells Coyote his work is finished.
Prove it to me.
Coyote then disappeared and before Old Man followed, he visited the Indians to let them know him and Coyote would not be seen again until Earth Woman was very old. The theme of this story is death and rebirth. People long for the perfect life and world, however mistakes have to be made in order to accomplish anything close to perfect. For example, Coyote set out to make the perfect world, but he made many mistakes along the way. Despite this, he still completed all his work on Earth
