  • Hello there! My name is Audrey Follett and this is the evolution of monarch butterflies!
  • Monarch butterflies are known for their migration in North America. But some monarchs didn’t migrate because they somehow ended up elsewhere, and they gained smaller wings, then passing their genetic variation on to their offspring. Their fitness rate was successful, producing more and more shorter-winged offspring. The monarchs that stayed in N. America have developed larger wings.
  • The selective pressure that occurred in the monarch's population was the distance the butterflies had to travel in order to get to places that grew milkweed year-round. This caused the process of natural selection in the species. The butterflies who ended up far from N. America did not develop the long wings needed for travel.
  • The trait variation that was selected against, or was least effective, were the monarchs with the smaller wings. Because of the long migration distance, the evolution of the shorter-winged butterflies was not effective when migrating.
  • The trait that was selected for was the trait that gave monarchs larger wings. They were able to survive hen flying the long distances. When mating with other monarchs hey pass that trait on to their offspring who then continue the cycle.
  • The change in the population were the larger wings. Because they didn't inherit the shorter wings, these monarchs are able to migrate and reproduce, successfully passing down their genes.
