- Cornelius Wyatt booked 3 cabins on the ship, one for himself and his wife, the second one for his two sisters, and the last one was beside to the narrator’s cabin for a mystery oblong box.
- Falling action
- Cornelius Wyatt talked about his wife in a repulsive way as if something was wrong with their marriage. Every night Mr. Wyatt went to the third cabin and returned in the morning to the cabin with his wife. They thought that Mr. Wyatt kept very valuable paintings in the box.
- Resolution
- The box had the dead body of his wife
- Suddenly, a storm arrives that damages the ship and the crew with the passengers had to reach the nearest port in the lifeboats. Mr. Wyatt went back to get his box and he held onto it.
- Theme
- Mr. Wyatt sank down with the box to the bottom of the sea, while everyone else made it safely to port.
- After a month of the incident, the narrator meets with Captain Hardy, he tells the narrator that Mr. Wyatt's box had the body of his wife, Mr. Wyatt wanted to take the body back to New York and the captain registered the box as luggage for passengers to board. Mr. Wyatt's wife that everyone saw was actually a servant.
- The theme of this story is that love can make people go crazy, and do meaningless things, even risk dying for love.
