- My dad provided for our family. My mom lives in Tijuana, across the border and depended on my father. I made the decision to drop my college plans after the doctors told us my father was diagnosed with pneumonia and was not responding to any medication. I quickly began my job search.
- Grow Up
- I graduated during the pandemic in the year 2021. Covid-19 was still on the rise and everything was virtual. I spent that summer clueless to how serious the virus was and still is. Ignorance is bliss they say, until it hits you. After spending the summer without a mask, my dad fell sick. He was hospitalized after what we thought was simply just the virus. School hadn't even started and I immediately had to drop my plans of going to college.
- I soon found a job working as waitress at a little restaurant in mission valley. I would use the excuse that I was too busy working whenever my family would ask me if I wanted to see my dad. I slept on my cousins couch and worked to be able to send some money to my mom. My mom is unable to cross to the US and she did not have her proper documentation. I would not visit my mom often either. My dad was hospitalized for 3 months before he finally started to respond to the medicine.
- I had to step up and take my little brother to school. Even after my dad was responding, and soon was released from the hospital, he still was recovering. It took him a year and a half to recover and had to be on an oxygen tank. Even though my dad was out, nothing was the same. My job as a waitress didn't last long before I found an opportunity in amazon operations.
- At this point I had no motivation to go back to school. I still had to take on responsibility of making sure my brother was taken to and picked up from school. I became sad over the fact that I had lost so many connections and friends, due to the fact that I was busy trying to work overtime and care from my brother. Even though I saw everyone get on with their lives, pausing mine for almost 2 years was difficult. I soon realized I was not the only person going through a hard time. I had shut myself out for so long, I felt like I was the only one going through something like this, which was selfish. This only motivated to keep pushing for more and to do better to help my family out. In 2022, I got promoted to assistant manager for amazon operations. Although it is a steady Job, I knew I had to go back to school and continue on with my journey. Growing up I never knew the feeling Sonder until I went through this. Then in 2023, I got the word Sonder tattooed on my forearm.
