- Flanagan Family Dinner
- This is my family; my mother and father, my older and younger sister, and myself. My mom stayed home with us and did some child care for other families, and my dad commuted a long way to his job. My mom has a masters degree but never had a career,
- My mother would usually cook on her own before my dad got home from work. She is a great cook, but doesn't love doing it every night. The kids were never expected to help out and learning how to cook was not explicitly taught or encouraged.
- We would usually be in the other room, playing, doing homework, or watching TV. At some point we would be asked to set the table. Looking back I wish we had been more involved and learned both the practical and the cultural knowledge associated with cooking.
- My dad would fairly often get home later than he wanted to. My mom understood, but was sometime frustrated and unsure how long to wait, especially pre-cellphone. The food we ate usually reflected middle class busy-ness.
- When my dad got home we would all usually be happy, and get up to greet him. My mom would be relieved and happy as well. However, there were undercurrents of my mom being frustrated with my dad being gone so long and her being expected to stay home.
- Then we would all sit down and eat., and my mom would sit at the head of the table. Conversation would be open and relatively calm. The children usually did most of the talking while my parents listened. My dad never spoke about his work. After, my dad and the kids would clean up, and usually we would have some sort of dessert, like ice cream.
