- Elena is a 9th grader that goes to a public school called public school 13. Elena was bullied by the black girls and her classmates in that school.
- Elena and her family moved to Paterson, New Jersey. In a Puerto Rican tenement known as El Building. Next to El Building, there was a house in the block where Eugene and his family moved in.
- Eugene doesn´t need you
- When the semester started Elena and Eugene became friends after Elena approach him. Eugene was shy so Elena did most of the talking that day.
- On November 22 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. That was also the very same day Eugene had invited Elena to his house to study for an American History test. The students were dismissed early for his death. Elena was filled with elation and went to prepare to go to Eugene house.
- Her thoughts were all filled with being inside Eugene's house. Before she left her mom warned her that she is headed for humiliation and pain. When she went to Eugene house Eugene's mom opened the door. She did not like Elena when she saw her and kicked her out.
