- Polk wanted to claim California, New Mexico, and land near the disputed southern border of Texas, but Mexico did not want to give them up. As a solution he sent American diplomat, John Slidell, to Mexico and offer them $30 million but the government didn't want to meet with him and Polk was angry.

- After Mexico refused the offer, General Zachary Taylor marched troops into Texas to provoke Mexicans into war to gain land in 1846.

Along with agreeing that the border would be along the Rio Grande, they also agreed to give up Texas, and on March 10 the U.S. Congress accepted the treaty.
