- Hi Erik! I'm about to get my COVID vaccine, and was wondering: how do they actually work?
- Good uestion, Jack! The COVID vaccine is an mRNA vaccine, and it works differently from the flu vaccine. Here's how it works.
- When you're unvaccinated, a virus will come in and attack one of your cells. It injects its DNA into your cell through its special spike-proteins. This DNA will be copied through Transcription into mRNA. This mRNA will be read in your cell through Translation and will tell your cell to make hundreds of copies of the virus.
- Fortunately, your body has an imune system that can identify and kill any intruders it encounters. It will make Y-shaped proteins called antibodies that stop the viruses from using their spike proteins and marks them for destruction. However, it takes a while for your immune system to find out what kind of antibodies it needs.

- An mRNA vaccine gives your immune system an extra boost. It has the mRNA code for the viruses' spike proteins alone. Your cells read this code through Translation in a ribosome and makes thousands of these spikes. It then disperses them where your immune system can learn what kind of antibodies are effective against them.
- Armed with the mRNA code for the virus' spike proteins, your immune system can start producing antibodies and destroy the intruders. Specieal B-cells can remember which antibodies are effective against the specific virus, so your body will be set next time the same virus attacks again.
