  • James Langston Hughes was born Feb. 1, 1902. He was born in Joplin, Missouri.
  • Moved Again
  • When his parents separated he moved to Lawrence, Kansas to live with his grandmother. After the divorce his dad moved to Mexico and his mom started moving around.
  • Growing Success
  • His grandmother died when Hughes was in his teens so he went to live with his mother. His mother moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he then went to school. He went to school at Central High School and was a track runner. He also enjoyed writing poetry for the school magazine.
  • Goodbye Langston
  • After he graduated high school he went to live with his father in Mexico for a year. He there wrote the poem "The Negro Speaks Of Rivers" and then was published in The Crisis Magazine and was "highly praised". Then left to return to the united states and attend Columbia University only to study briefly.
  • In 1925 Hughes met American poet Vachel Lindsay who he showed some of his poems to. She was impressed and wanted to use his connections to promote his poetry and bring it to a wider audience. He got his chance and in the 1930's Hughes would frequently travel the United States on lecture tours.
  • James Langston Hughes died on May 22, 1967 in New York. He died from complications of prostate cancer. His funeral was filled with Jazz Blues but did not contain much spoken eulogy. His ashes were interred beneath the entrance of the Arthur Schomburg Center
