In the early 1800's, Quaker abolitionist Isaac T. Hopper proposed to start a secret system of slave escape routs called the underground railroad

It wasn't actually underground or a railroad, but rather roots of trails, passages and shelters runaway slaves could use to find freedom in non-slave states
Harriet Tubman was a slave who is famous for rescuing approximately 70 slaves in the underground railroad. Early in her life she suffered severe brain trauma after a blow to the head by a led weight. The long term injuries wouldn't effect what she did for her country though. She eventually became a nurse for the union in the civil war and inspired thousands of enslaved women that they can do anything when they put their minds and hearts to it. Harriet Tubman passed away from pneumonia in 1913 with her last words being ''I have made a place for you." What she did and went through is beyond describable and will never be forgotten
