- Mood
- “We are going to a large island, it’s a mystery. But I know it’s called Ship-Trap Island.”
- “I can’t see it. Ugh the air is like moist black velvet.”
- Foreshadowing
- “Don’t talk like that. Perhaps the jaguar does care. I think they have an understanding about death and fear.”
- “The best sport in the world is hunting. Not for the jaguar, who cares what they think.”
- Irony
- “I am a hunter, not a murderer.”
- “Hunting tigers ceased to interest me some years ago…. There’s no thrill left in tigers… I have to invent a new animal to hunt.”
- The author describes the setting as a,“Dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht.” Rainsford also mentions how the air feels like moist black velvet. This can make the readers feel curious.
- Conflict
- When Rainsford said, “Your’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels.” It made me think that maybe Rainsford will be in the jaguars position, and he will want people to care what he thinks. I feel this will foreshadow that he might be the jaguar.
- Climax
- This scene is an example of situation irony because Rainsford was talking to Whitney about how he doesn’t care how the jaguars feel. Now that he knows he will be hunted by General Zaroff he is feeling terrified, but a little confused. This scene could also have a little bit of foreshadowing because Rainsford could end up killing General Zaroff in the end.
- Resolution
- “My dear fellow, there is one that can.” This is an example of the conflict starting to rise because General Zaroff is telling Rainsford that he is the animal that the general is going to hunt.
- “He heard the hounds. Then he leaped into the sea.” This scene represents the climax of the story because General Zaroff and his dogs were right behind Rainsford. They were coming after him, so he decided to jump to get away. General Zaroff thought Rainsford didn’t make it, so this could make the readers feel upset or worried for Rainsford.
- General Zaroff thought Rainsford jumped off a cliff, but then Rainsford came back to the cabin. Since Rainsford was still alive the two men had to battle it out with each other. The one who lost got to sleep in the nice comfy bed, sadly the other had to ghet fed to the dogs. “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” The author wrote this quote because Rainsford won.
