  • Bryan Stevenson, a young lawyer, began representing Walter McMillian. Walter is a black respected and successful business owner of a logging company who had a interracial affair with a white woman Karen Kelly.
  • Climax
  • Walter McMillian was wrongfully convicted for a murder he had no involvement with. He was sent to Death Row without any actual good evidence that he committed homicide.
  • Falling Action
  • Bryan Stevenson did everything to get justice for Walter. While gathering evidence for Walter's trial, Ralph Myers the man who claimed he saw Walter at the crime scene and claimed Walter kidnapped him and made him do things for him after the murder, finally told the truth that he made all of it up. While you have may thought this confession could have proved him innocent, Bryan still needed more evidence and more truthful witnesses that he didn't commit the crime.
  • Resolution
  • After 6 long years, Walter McMillian finally was released from prison. Many people like Walter's family and community was at the courthouse the day of his release cheering him on. There was also many camera crews recording Walter's release. Walter felt free but still upset about all that lost time.
  • After being released, Walter had a lot of moral support from Bryan and Walter's family. Walter's wife refused to take him back after all the drama and rumors. Walter wasn't to upset but he understood. He had to stay away from his hometown because many people still believed he was dangerous. Walter was very happy being free and getting back to his logging business. He soon got into a logging accident and got very badly injured. He couldn't work in that business anymore so instead started selling car parts and cars. After that he got dementia and struggled to get the care he needed. He had to be out in the nursing home.
  • Walter finally on September 11, 2013 died. He grew very old and struggled with dementia and confusion. Bryan Stevenson gave a very meaningful speech at Walter's funeral. Many people came up to Bryan after the funeral asking for legal advice and help.Bryan left the funeral being not so sad because he knew he would get to help other people.
