  • Charles Michel de l'Epee started tutoring two deaf sisters in 1760, and he noticed that they used signs, and hand movements to communicate. He studied how they spoke, without ever talking, and wondered how he could help others communicate like these sisters.
  • PARIS, FRANCE 1760
  • That night, Charles sat down at his desk and started to think, how could he help others communicate like the sisters? He soon realised that the only way was to create a language for deaf people.

  • He worked all day and all night, until finally he did it, he made the first language for the deaf, with motions.
  • His language consisted of hand motions that would ressemble words. He then released the language, and deaf people have been using his language ever since all around the world.
  • Over 300 years later, Charles' dream came true, in paris, France, a school for the deaf was constructed in his honor, and now hosts over 600 students that are hard of hearing.
