- Back in 2001, it was the middle of September and my grandfather told my mom she was going to go to the U.S. My mom was in shock and she didn't know what to think, but she had no choice.

- "HERMANA!"
- My mom traveled with her older brother, my Tio Adan. They both left their family behind to find better opportunities. They took an airplane from Guerrero, where my family is from, to Tijuana.
- "Hola me llamo Waldemar. Como te llamas tu?"
- "Hola. Me llamo Rafaela."
- They got off the plane in Tijuana and walked from Tijuana to the U.S border. They waited till it got dark in order to cross.
- Eventually, my mom and her brother got to their older sister's house, my Tia Maximina's house. After that, they started looking for those better opportunities.
- Years later my mom was heading to work when she bumped into a guy at the bus stop. That guy would eventually become my dad. They say that it was "love at first sight".
- After everything, my mom's American journey was worth it. She's truly happy and has everything she's ever wanted, a family of her own.
