  • For most of the expedition, the crew used the Missouri river to travel. While traveling this river, the crew discovered the Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean. This was important because Jefferson had believed prior that this route would connect the new western lands to routes already used for trading.
  • A passage to the Pacific Ocean!
  • During the winter, the crew stayed in the Maden Village. Here, they traded resources with the Native Americans and learned of their diplomacy. With this, they hired a french trapper, Toussaint Charbonneau, and his Native American wife, Sacagawea.
  • Yellowstone National park was established at this time. As well as a lot of new resources were obtained through this land and knowledge of the Native American cultures/tribes around them.
  • The Lewis and Clark expedition proved to be very important to territorial expansion. The purchased and explored western lands developed a relationship between Americans and the Sacagawea tribe. The tribe was grateful for the support, providing the U.S with land knowledge, horses, and other resources.
