  • Exposition
  • "You was a worm once!"
  • "Howard Blair, That's sinful talk!"
  • Inciting Incident
  • Darwin's Theory of Evolution:-little bugs got to be bigger bugs, and sprouted legs and crawled up on the land
  • Rising Action
  • Inherit the Wind takes place in a rural and religious town called Hillsboro. In the beginning, we are introduced to the characters Melinda, a 12 year old girl and Howard, a 13 year old boy. From their simple and short meet, we can tell that Howard and Melinda have different points of view on evolution and religion. Later on we are introduced to Rachel, Meeker, Bertram Cates, Mr. and Mrs. Brady and many more!
  • Climax
  • The Inciting Incident began when Bertram Cates read chapter 17 of Darwin's Origin of Species to his sophomore class. The status quo of Hillsboro is to be a religious follower and if one went against it, there would be an outburst of chaos. Brady admitted "...that [if] my own brother challenged the faith of millions, as Mr. Drummond is doing, I would oppose him still!" This was the disruption and it set the conflict into motion.
  • Falling Action
  • The rising action began when Drummond and Brady were introduced as the two lawyers that will be in the courtroom. Brady will stand for the religious town, Hillsboro, and Drummond will stand for Bertram Cates. Once the townspeople heard Drummond will come to Hillsboro and stand for "evil-ution", they wanted to keep him out. Despite the town, Brady wanted him there. He knew that Drummond will bring more attention and he liked the idea of him and the town being recognized more.
  • Denouement
  • The climax is reached once Drummond and Brady argue whether Bertram Cates should be free or guilty due to him reading about Darwin's theory of Evolution. Also the climax is reached when Drummond asks Brady to take the stand and talk about the bible. Brady did not accurately present his argument but Drummond did. The courtroom had a better response to Drummond rather than Brady which made him feel humiliated.
  • "Now tell me. Do you feel that every word that's written in this book should be taken literally?"
  • The falling action is reached when the court reveals the verdict that Bertram Cates is found guilty and Drummond payed his fine of $500. There were mixed reactions from the townspeople. Bertram Cates is now feeling anxious about his daily life back in society since many will know him for committing a great "sin." Before people started leaving the courtroom, Brady wanted to make a speech to everyone but he did not receive the attention he was seeking so he gave up and had a stroke.
  • So Cool!
  • Towards the end of the play, news breaks out that Brady has passed away from a "busted belly." Although Drummond was Brady's opposing force in the courtroom, Drummond always had respect for him even after he was gone. At this point, the plays conflict has been resolved. Since Cates is a free man he decided to leave Hillsboro with Drummond and Rachel on a train that leaves at 5:30.
