Rise of the Roman Republic from a plebeians perspective
we want freedom
we want rights
We used to be ruled by the Etruscans until the patricians resented the Etruscan rule. In 509 B.C.E. A group of patricians, led by Lucius Junius Brutus. Rebelled and drove out the last Etruscan king and they created a republic. But they selfishly used it for themselves because apparently were not good enough.
YAY!
fine you may have your rights and fredom
After they discluded us from their republic, we still had to do the dirty work. We were still the same old Peasants, laborers,, and shopkeepers. We still had no rights. We still had no voice in the government.
We did it
After they created their republic we still had no rights. So we decided to rebel. We began to demand more political rights but they wouldn't listen. We were angry over our lack of power,so in 494 BC we marched out of the city and camped on a nearby hill. We refused to return until the patricians met our demands.
Our plan worked. Rome was falling apart without us. So eventually the patricians gave us what we wanted, rights. when we came back into the city they allowed us to elect officials called Tribunes of the Plebs. The Tribunes of the Plebs could veto, or overrule, actions by the Senate and other government officials. In 451 BC the patricians agreed, and the laws were published on tablets called the Twelve Tables
After we got our rights and freedom back once again we were able to make a few changes to Rome, such as. In 367 BC a new law stated that one of the two consuls must be a plebeian. Also the plebeians were able to become senators. Also finally, in 287 B.C.E., the plebeians earned the right to pass laws for all Roman citizens. So that is how the conflict of orders went down in my perspective.
