  • That's because we have a low tide today. There are two types of tides, high tide and low tide. When one side experiences high tide, the other gets low tide. When there is high tide, there are high waves, and when there are low waves.
  • The moon has a large effect on Earth's tides. The moon's gravity pulls the Earth's water towards it, giving it high tide. So much so, that the moon pulls water from the other parts of the Earth, giving those sides low tide.
  • YOOOOO! Bro! How come the waves are so low today, man?
  • Well, we talked about how the moons gravity has such a great influence on our tides. Due to its proximity, it has much more direct influence than our sun, which has much, much more gravitational force. This is especially evident on spring and neap tides.
  • So, how do the moon and sun play a role in these tides that you speak of.
  • During spring tides, there is always new or full moon. Along with the moon, we also have the sun. Their combined gravitational force pull the tide of one side to an extremely high level. All the while, there is more water pulled in from the neighboring oceans (perpendicular to the high tide area) that they have much less water, and as a result a much lower low tide.
  • What is this spring tide you speak of?
