  • Hi! my name is Joe. And today I am going to be showing you all the organs and the processes of the digestive system.
  • Firstly, is the mouth. The mouth is the beginning of the digestiveprocess. Digestion starts here as soon as you take the first bite of a meal. Chewing breaks the food into pieces that are more easily digested, while saliva mixes with the food to begin breaking it down into a form where your body can absorb and use it.
  • This is the esophagus. the esophagus receives food from your mouth when you swallow. The epiglottis is a small flap that folds over your windpipe when you swallow to prevent you from choking. Multiple muscularcontractions inside the esophagus called peristalsis pushes food and liquid into your stomach.
  • Next is the stomach. The stomach is a holloworgan or a container that holds food while it is being mixed with your stomach enzymes. These enzymes continue the process of breaking down food into a usable form. Cells in your stomach create strong acid and enzymes that are responsible for breaking down the food even more. When the contents of the stomach are broken down enough, they are sent into the smallintestine.
  • Next up is the smallintestine. the small intestine is a 22 foot long tube that breaks down food using enzymes released by the pancreas and bile from the liver. Peristalsis also works in this organ, moving food through and mixing it with juices from the pancreas and liver. The duodenum is the first section of the small intestine. It is mostly responsible for the breaking down process. The jejunum and ileum lower in the intestine are mainly responsible for the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream. it then moves into the largeintestine.
  • Last but not least, the largeintestine. The large intestine is responsible for processing waste so that emptying the bowels is easy. It is a 6 foot long tube that connects the smallintestine to the rectum. Waste left over from the digestiveprocess is passed through the tube by peristalsis, first in a liquid state and later in a solid form. As waste passes through the intestine, water is removed. Then it forms into poo, and empties it into the rectum once or twice a day. Then you probably know what happens next.
