- I arrived at the carnival just as they began and my newly-wedded wife hands me a bottle of flat sherry. The night was dark and chilly as we joined the town for our yearly event. She left to talk to her friends as I took a long guzzle from the glass. My dear friend Montresor suddenly appeared next to me.

- We talked about our businesses and long day as I sipped on my bottle of wine. When he shared his news with me I was beyond shocked. I knew I had to get my hands on that precious wine, even if it went spoiling my night at the carnival to do so. It shouldn't take but long for my dear friend Montresor to lead me to his house and show me that cask.

- I must get my mouth on that wine before that no good Luchesi does. Surely this won't take but a second of my time to get to. If only I can convince lucky Montresor to show me where the wine is. He must be so stupid to think that Luchesi could take on a job so important. Only I can truly know the difference and deliciousness of the Amontillado.
- Rising Action
- It is farther on.
- I finish the bottle of wine and then grasp Montresor's arm, pleading with him to lead me toward the Amontillado.
- Well if YOU insist.
- He finally succumbed and guided me towards his empty house and down into the dark, damp catacombs of the Montresor's. Before we enter he hands me a torch and I struggle my way down the staircase, tripping and wobbling, only slightly.
- I shout in a questioning manner, suddenly lost for words as I feel a cough start to rise in my throat and my head begin to throb. ---I break into a coughing fit, unable to hold it in.
- Amontillado!
