  • This is a story about how my grandfather persevered over many years to became a critically acclaimed novelist.
  • Not more emails... how am I going to do this project?!
  • My grandfather now lives in Sharon, CT with my family. He can be difficult to be around because he is deaf and doesn't always wear his hearing aid. All the stories in this novel were sent to me through email. Sometimes I think he is more comfortable with written words than people.
  • Alex-Meemee-Spike
  • Part 1Where it all began...
  • My grandfather was born in 1946 in Hollywood, California.
  • He also attended Hollywood Highschool with the actors who later became the three musketeers.
  • I got you this time Steve!
  • He attended Berkeley University during the free speech movement, and he raced Steve McQueen on the highway after school.
  • He has a lot of crazy stories to tell.He always knew he wanted to be a novelist.
  • Berkeley University next right
  • you sure don't!
  • Sproul hall
  • FREE SPEECH!
  • During this time it was turbulent to be at Berkeley
  • I know the protests are for the best but they are getting disruptive.
  • In April of 1967 my grandfather was accepted to Columbia University
  • WAIT, this cant be for me?Holy s**t it is !!!
  • Part 2The Writer In NYC
  • In 1972 Spike published his first novel.
  • Hi, I came to talk about getting my book published?
  • He published Turkey Hash with Harper and Rowe publishing inc.
  • well you came to the right place!
  • But even having published a novel, money was still tight and he couldn't get another novel selected for publication. So, my grandfather worked as a carpenter to makes ends meet...
  • He also worked as a taxi driver.
  • The Bronx
  • Where you going?
  • And when his shift was over he went and wrote in his apartment near Milligan Place.
  • Finally his hard work paid off, he got another book contract.
  • Just sign right there and your good to go!
  • Sweet!
  • Later that year my grandfather went to a party, were he met my grandmother, Christina.
  • My roommate has told me so much about you!
  • Hi, i'm Craig
  • In 1982 my grandfather published his most popular book, The Good Son, and it was reviewed in The New York Times.
  • My grandfather married my grandmother, moved to Vermont and went on write 16 novels which were routinely reviewed by the NYTimes, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal. He also wrote for magazines like Parade and Men's Journal. His childhood dreams of being a novelist had been realized.
  • Despite my grandfather's success he is a deeply unhappy man. In the course of this project, I came to see how even if you achieve what you aspire to, you may not be happy. My grandfather overcame many struggles over the course of his life but couldn't find a way to participate in this project with me, beyond emailing me responses to my interview questions. He seemed deeply isolated and sad, which makes me sad, knowing that I can try to help but I don't know if it would help.
