  • The Libby Prison escape was a prison escape from Libby Prison, a Confederate prison in Richmond, Virginia. It happened in February 1864 and over 100 Union prisoners of war escaped from captivity. It was one of the most successful prison breaks of the American Civil War.
  • I have an escape plan!
  • Rat Hell was an area of the prison that guards and prisoners avoided. Prisoners and officers that were in on the plan used this to their advantage by making the tunnel here. No one ever came here because of the rat infestation. The floor was covered in two feet of straw, which provided good hiding places for excavated debris and prisoners.
  • Yes Colonel!
  • We must dig a tunnel through Rat Hell!
  • The rats in the pitch darkness made digging much scarier than it should have been. Prisoners had to feel their way through the cellar while digging and dealing with the mice at the same time. The darkness made it harder to work but also provided great cover for the men while working. Rarely, when guards entered Rat Hell, they left quickly because of the the uninviting darkness.
