  • Welcome all to Indus Valley Civilization - The first civilization of India
  • Also Known as Harappan Civilization. Features of Indus Valley Civilization are Town Planning, Citadel, Grid system, Drainage System, Important Buildings, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Art Craft, Script and language, Religious practices.
  • The Great Bath
  • Citadel was Usually based on a mound or at an elevated place. Ruling class lived here. Below the Citadel Lay a lower town Containing Brick houses which were inhibited by common people.
  • Town Planning was one of the Unique feature of Indus Valley civilization. Cities Were divided into upper town and lower town. They followed Grid system. The main Streets were Quite wide and were laid out in a pattern. They were straight and intersect each other at right angle. This rectangular town planning is unique feature and was not known in another civilization.

  • The Great Bath, is one of the most Important public places. It appears to be one of the most important public places. it comprised of a tank made of bricks. At the north and south ends of Great bath, brick steps led to the bottom of the tank which could be emptied by a drain. Great bath was meant for some elaborate ritual of vital importance for the people.
  • Land is very fertile due to annual inundation in Indus River.Agriculture was one of the main economic activities of the people. Farmers had system to divert the water from the river and store it to be used for watering the plants and crops. Wheat and Barley were the main crops.
  • Well Organized commerce was the characteristic feature of Indus Valley civilization People trade with cities of Mesopotamia and Harappan
