In the mid 1700s the British and French had a conflict largely due to the fact of the Ohio River Valley which was claimed by both countries. The French built Fort Duquesne to keep the British out but VirginianGovernor Robert Dinwiddie disapproved so he sent young ambitious leader George Washington and troops to fight back
This is not your land . You leave must now !
You are outnumbered we are have claimed this territory with fort Duquesne. Return to where you came from
Washington and his troops defeated a small french force but reinforcements forced Washington to surrender. This ignited a world war that spread across the globe between the British and French. Labeled the French-Indian War because of the French and their Indian allies.
I surrender !
The British started off strong overwhelming two forts near Nova Scotia with help of colonial forces but an ambush near Fort Duquesne caused the death of General Braddock and greatly weakened the British forces but a skillful retreat from Washington saved most troops..
There is too many of them, Retreat!!
General !!!!
The British cut off French shipping to the Americas which caused many Indians to leave the French and let the British capture Fort Duquesne and Louisbere which gave the British control of the St. Lawrence River. These victories allowed General James Wolfe to attack Quebec in 1759. Then the British captured Montreal which made the French surrender the rest of Canada and the region around the Great lakes..
I am out of here!!!
The British continued fighting throughout the rest of the world giving them control of India, the Philippines, West Africa, and the West Indies. This ended when the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 moving the French out of North America and giving the British the Great Lakes region, the Ohio Riven valley and Florida
Although the war was successful for the British, it was also very expensive and put them in a lot of debt. The British decided the best way to get rid of this debt was to tax the colonists. This angered the colonists and caused them to unite against their homeland.
