- Ch. 5- Kolya and Lev go to the haymarket a place where they sell illegal goods like ration cards and alcohol. While there Kolya gets in an argument with a merchant saying the vodka he's selling is actually wood alcohol. After he learns about the chicken coop from a boy.
- Ch. 8- Lev and Kolya visit the chicken coop the boy told them about even though he said the person guarding them would kill them.  When they got there they discovered the man was in ill condition. As a result he gave them the scraggly chicken saying he was sick of it.
- Ch. 9 After going through extreme measures to get Darling they realize he is a Hen and can't lay eggs. They decide to turn him into soup to make it worth the hassle. This was a great night since they haven't had an actual meal in months.
- Ch. 10 On the way to mga Lev and Kolya stumble across a field of dead soldier dogs. Koyla explains to lev how the Germans use them to bomb Russian tanks but it's an unsuccessful method. Minutes after he slits a dogs throat to put it out of its misery.
- Ch. 12 After helping the dog Kolya and Lev now rush against sunset and come across a soldier. It took the boys a moment to realize but he was dead and frozen solid. Kolya  took his guns and bullets to protect themselves from any Russians they may run into.

- Ch. 13- Its now dark and extremely freezing and by some miracle Lev and Kolya find a house with fire and four girls. Lev doesn't realize at first but the reason these girls are being kept fed and bathed is because they're the russians sex slaves. Kolya and Lev get to know the girls and their stories.
