- Mare Barrow lives in a poor town called the Stilts in a world divided by colour of blood - silver-blooded Silvers with supernatural powers are considered gods compared to Reds, regular humans forced into labour. Reds and Silvers hate each other, but Reds have little to no power against Silvers due to the Silver-only monarchy of her country, Norta.
- Climax
- Mare gets a job at the Silver royal palace, where she discovers that despite being Red, she has the incredible ability to control and produce lightning. To hide this anomaly, she is married to one of the princes, Maven, under the story that she is the lost Silver daughter of a dead general.
- Falling Action
- Despite knowing the consequences of working with Reds in her position, Mare keeps secret contact with a rebel Red organization known as the Scarlet Guard. To her surprise, Maven, her betrothed and a Silver prince, joins her in meeting with the Scarlet Guard and providing essential intel. Together, they organize strikes and a final coup on the palace to take control of Norta for good.
- Resolution
- At the attack on the palace, Maven and Mare are turned in by Queen Elara, Maven's mother. Using her powers as a "whisper", able to read minds and control others, she forces Cal, Maven's brother, to kill their father. It's revealed that Maven had been working with his mother, and had manipulated Mare and the Scarlet Guard. Mare and Cal fail to escape and are captured by Elara and Maven.
- Instead of killing them there, Maven and Elara plan to publicly execute them at the hands of other Silvers. Captive, Cal and Mare reconcile and discuss their feelings for each other. Together, they fight to survive in an arena designed to send a message. Despite knowing they will most likely die, they fight back.
- The Scarlet Guard crash the execution and rescue Mare and Cal, leaving via the Undertrain, a secret subway system. There, Mare is reunited with others like her friend Kilorn and her brother Shade, who was thought to be dead. Together, they begin to plan how to best stop the new king Maven and his mother Elara.
