  • The battle of New York happened on August 27, 1776. The Americans tried defending New York but the British were more experienced and had more people. after 2 days of fighting the British had lost 377 soliders and the Americans lost 1,407 soliders
  • After being discouraged after the loss of New York Washington read the Continental army the Crisis. They had a new sense of motivation and went to Trenton in hope of a win on December 25, 1776.
  • The Continental Army surprised the British soldiers and took 868 people, prisoner. During the battle of Trenton, Washington didn't lose a single man and since they caught them by surprised the mercenaries surrounded quickly.
  • A week later Washington went to Princeton and captured another 300 British troops.
  • After Princeton and Trenton Howe realized that it would take more than capturing New York City to win the war.
  • African Americans were worried after the Declaration of Independence was signed if all men were created equal would mean that they would be free. Most of them joined the British army because Washington banned them from the Continental Army. After the war, the New England colonists took steps to abolish slavery.
