  • In order to go to the center of the Earth, we need to learn about the different layers between us and the core.
  • Outer Core
  • We are going to the center in order to get material from the Inner Core that could prove very valuable.
  • This is a solid layer, it can be 6 or 7 miles thick on the ocean floor. Or 25 miles thick on land. Here you can see that the crust is broken into tectonic plates.
  • Crust
  • The First Layer is the crust, this is the layer that every human lives on.
  • Inner Core
  • These plates cause earthquakes.
  • The Second Layer is the somewhat solid Mantle.
  • The hot rock in the mantle has convection currents where hot rock rises from the core and sinks when it is cooler near the crust, taking place of one another.
  • Mantle is a solid that moves like a liquid. It is also the thickest layer and makes up for almost all of Earth's mass.
  • Mantle
  • This part is 1,400 miles thick, it has the pressure of the mantle and crust, and is over 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The Third Layer is the Outer Core, it is a liquid.
  • The outer core's convection currents create Earth's magnetic field.
  • Even though the inner core is hotter than the outer is is a liquid because the pressure and density are so high.
  • The Fourth and Final Layer is the Inner Layer, it is a solid.
  • This part is just under 1000 miles, it has lots of pressure due to the many layers above it and is even hotter than the sun.
  • Thanks for helping us learn about layers of the Earth.
  • Wish us luck on our adventure!
