- Janie and Starks are now sleeping in separate rooms because their marriage is going down hill. Janie tries to give him some food but he wont eat because of two reasons, he does not have appetite and their are rumors that Janie is trying to poison him.
- Chapter 10
- In reality his loss of appetite and fatigue is his kidney failure is getting worse and he is going to die a doctor tells Janie. While Janie is trying to tell Starks he is shewing her out the room, but Janie explodes and tells him he's going to die and everything he has done wrong to her. While Janie is talking Starks dies.
- Chapter 10
- After Starks death and funeral Janie has a surge of independence and burns all her head rigs, wears her hair down, has conversations with the towns people, and is working at the shop. After a period of wearing dark cloths she starts wearing white to symbolize her mourning is done.
- Chapter 11
- Janie's worker asks to leave early to see the ball game and she agrees. After everyone is gone a handsome man comes in, Vergible Woods, too buy a pack of cigarettes he is very polite and invites Janie to play checkers.
- After Tea Cake says "Good night" Janie sits in her porch and watch's the sunset thinking about the contrast between tea cake and Starks.
- Another day comes by and Tea cake spend the whole day doing activities like playing checkers, he plays air guitar, and by the end of the day they go fishing to the lake. The next morning he arrives and Janie offers him break feast, although then he disappears for several days.
