  • A German king known as Otto the Great had been gaining power and authority. In 962, he had persuaded the Pope to crown him emperor. He claimed much of central Europe and was rebuilding the Roman Empire as a more holy, Christian version of itself. Otto had worked closely with the church and strengthened the church within the empire. In fact, the church got so much power that they fought back and claimed higher authority

  • Concordat of Worms
  • Pope Gregory believed that the emperor should not have more power over the church, leading to a conflict with King Henry IV. Gregory insisted that the pope had the authority to choose bishops, with were wealthy people owning large amounts of land. • Henry IV was a German Emperor that ruled in the mid-1000s. He and Pope Gregory VII had been in a conflict about who should have higher power until he was eventually excommunicated, or removed from the church in 1076. Henry begged the Pope to forgive him for three days in the blistering cold snow.
  • Please! I beg of you!
  • Eventually, an agreement was made to end the power struggle between rulers and popes. This was called the Concordat of Worms. It gave the church the sole ability to appoint bishops and let emperors give grants of land to bishops. Despite this agreement, the conflicts still continued.
  • This conflict NEEDS to stop! Lets all come to an agreement.
  • By the 1100s, trade had been increasing throughout Europe, causing England and France's monarchies to grow more powerful. This is because taxes from trade benefited the kings profitably and politically. A Capetian ruler known as King Phillip II Augustus came to the throne in 1180. He gained more control over the French church, acquired large amounts of land, and made France the strongest monarchy in Medival Europe.
