  • Here we see how society views and treats Ezekial and how he views and treats himself. Everybody thinks he is a slave who is uneducated but he knows who he truly is. He is a free man with human rights and a good education and English he learned from reading the bible. Ezekial has run away from the south and plans to go to Canada where he can be a free man with his family. He defies all the limits and boundaries put on him by society just because of his skin color.
  • While going to Lowell Massachusetts, Lyddie had many problems like the overcrowded space and the mean glares she had been receiving but her biggest struggle happened when the wheels of the coach got stuck in the muddy sloughs from the rain. This event delayed the trip by over 15 minutes and forced Lyddie to take matters into her own hands. Because of Lyddies past experience, she was able to easily fix the wheel and make a new friendship with the coachmen.
  • When Lyddie comes back from her log cabin at home, she gets into a heated argument with Mistress Cutler. Mistress Cutler had always been a rude and classist boss that Lyddie just had to work with. After Lyddie and her co-worker, Triphena, finish all the cleaning, they feel it's acceptable for Lyddie to go home. The Mistress immediately gets mad and fires her. Finally, Lyddie had enough of being taken for granted and treated like a slave. She goes and leaves for work at the mills.
