He enters and sees his friend from boyhood, The narrator came to see Roderick Usher because Usher is very sick. Roderick warmly greets him but can tell that Usher does not look so well. The Ushers were a group of people who had children with their relatives.
Roderick only lives with his sister, Madeline. He explains that she is dying of cataleptical disease. When she passes, Usher wants to keep her body in a tomb until he figures out her burial. He wants his visitor to help him. The narrator notices that she still looks flushed.
When the narrator goes to sleep, he starts hearing weird noises. There was a big storm and Usher rushes up to the room to see a fog out the window with a terrifying scene. The narrator starts to read a book to calm Usher down.
All of a sudden, they hear a scream. Madeline flies out of the casket and jumps onto Roderick. She is alive! They both die. The reason Roderick did not release his sister in the tomb is because he wanted to be the only Usher left alive.
