- Beowulf ended up hearing the tale of Grendel, a monster that killed many warriors of Heorot. Eventually, Beowulf was called to the land's defense.
- Crossing the Threshold
- Beowulf could not refuse the call, he would sooner die than be a man who shamefully cannot defend his people, so he rallied his men and set off.
- Tests and Enemies
- Beowulf's mentor is King Hrothgar. Having Hrothgar by his side teaches Beowulf the knowledge that a king must defend his people, there is no other option. He also receives a powerful sword from the knight, Unferth.
- Beowulf and his men cross the sea and travel to Denmark.
- Beowulf defeats Grendel and takes his arm as a trophy. He would go on to also battle the swamp hag and dragon.
