  • Are you guys playing video games again? How long have been in the couch just sitting and playing?
  • Yes Camille, we are playing video games.
  • Guys, I have been observing you and I noticed that you were spending too much screen time than the usual. It is too excessive and I am really concerned about it. May I know your side?
  • We can't help it, it's just so addicting. There are also good benefits that we receive by doing it. It helps us to relax, feel comfort, and enjoy. It allows us to escaped the reality for a whle.
  • Yes I understand your point and it is valid but we all know that excessive screen time is bad for your health and well-being. It has benefits but if you do it too much there's always a negative effect that will impact you. Do you know that too much screen time can lead toobesity, sleep problems, chronic neck and back problems, depression, and anxiety. Specially at our age 13, I know that it very hard not to be tempt in using devices too much but if you think about the effects that can harm you and affect you for the rest of your life, you will be able to understand my point.
  • There are a lot of consequences on too much of a screen time. First is physical strain to your body and eyes. Spending long hours staring at a screen definitely takes a toll on your body. It can also lead to retina damage and blurred vision. Second is sleep deprivation. The amount of screen time you clock has a direct impact on how much sleep you are getting, given that the blue light emitted from digital screens interferes with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin in your body. Third is susceptibility to chronic health conditions. The increased risk of obesity also makes you more vulnerable to chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
  • It can also affect loss of cognitive ability, one of the scariest consequences of excessive screen time is its effect on one's mental health. Too much screen time alters the very structure of your brain by causing the grey matter that’s responsible for cognitive processes to shrink, as well as deformity to the white matter that serves as the network to the brain’s signal communication. Another, it can impair your socializing skills. Using digital devices is a largely solitary activity – you don’t have much real-life interactions when we are preoccupied with what's happening on the screen. It can weakened your emotional judgement. Too much screen time also affects your ability to register and process emotions.
  • Finally, spending too much time in the virtual world of screens can also have a negative impact on how you perceive yourself. The time you lose that could have been spent on forming relationships with other people, discovering and honing your passions, and creating new experiences leads to a weakened sense of self-identity and confidence. Now that you know the bad effects that can affect you, it's up to you now on what are the things that you want to happen on yourself. But the right thing to do is to limit your screen time for your advantage.
  • Thankyou for educating us about this matter. We can assure you that we are now going to limit our screen time.
