  • Robert.E.Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House. When Lee was leaving the union soldiers started clapping but grant stopped it this was the first step towards reconciliation.

  • Joseph Johnston surrendered on April 26. This bought an end to the war for 89,900 soldiers in the biggest surrender of the war. Even though all confederate states had not surrendered this was effectively the end of the war. The north and the south both saw the devastation but The united states of America were preserved

It seemed that with the end of the war he would now look over a country moving forward from its dark and difficult past.
  • Lincoln was assassinated by john booth at a theatre on 14th April. He was shot in the back of his head when the audience was laughing.He was pronounced dead on April 15th 1865 7:22 in the morning. The nation mourned the loss of a leader. He was the person who stood strong in dark times, a symbol of humanity,empathy,honesty and courage.
  • One may say that the real winners of the civil war were those who were to not again become slaves. As we look back civil war stands as a symbol of what has forged America o be what it is today and where it strives to become. The fight for equality is not over even more than a century later but we take a step forward every day.
