- Before the 1760s the colonies had a lot of freedom even though they were under British rule. The colonies had their own leaders and learned to solve their own problems.Britain most of the time was at war so it did not always pay close attention to the colonies.

- In the 1760s,the French and Indian War started.Britain defeated France in the war in 1763. The war had been very expensive so Britain decided that its American colonies should help to pay its debts

- Britain forced the colonies to pay new taxes so they could have more money.People were very angry so they made a lot of protests and in 1766,the British government ended taxes.Charles Townshend implemented new taxes such as,tea,lead,paint,paper and glass.These taxes made the colonists even angrier.
- Soldiers were sent by the British government to Boston,Massachusetts.On March 5,1770,many soldiers were shot into a crowd.This event became known as the Boston Massacre.
- The same day that the massacre occurred,the British Parliament kept a tax on tea.3 years later Britain passed a law that allowed a British company to sell tea more cheaply than colonial merchants.On December of that same year,colonists border British ships in Boston and threw their cargo of tea into the water.This event is known as the Boston Tea Party.
