- Shang kings were powerful rulers who kept their power through military might. Shang society can be divided into six social classes. These were the king's clan, nobles, craftspeople, traders, farmers, and slaves. The Shang practiced ancestor worship and, sometimes, human sacrifice.
- The Noble Class
- Nobles were the highest ranking class after the royal class. Nobles fought in the King's armies. The nobles supplies the army with weapons, foot soldiers, and chariots. Shang nobles lived a life of luxury. They often lived in palaces and spent time hunting.
- Artisans and craftsmen comprised the middle class of Shang society. Their largest contribution was their work with bronze, which the Chinese developed as early as 1500 BCE. Their work with bronze was a very important aspect of society.
