  • In 1788, the first Chinese workers came to Canada to create the first year-round settlement. Later in the 1880s, the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) recruited Chinese labourers to work on constructing the railway.
  • More than 17 000 Chinese immigrants came to BC to work on the railway. White workers were paid $1.50 to $2.50 whereas Chinese labourers were paid half their salary ($1.00 a day).
  • Hundreds of Chinese immigrants died working on the railway from accidents, and malnutrition. The Chinese immigrants were not used to the Canadian climate, so many died of the winter cold and illness.
  • Chinese Canadians were segregrated socially, economically, and politically. For example, movie theatres segregated Chinese Canadians forcing them to sit in the balcony. Chinese students were separated in a different than white students. Chinese Canadians could not become lawyers, pharmacists, engineers or doctors in B.C.
  • When the CPR was completed, the provincial legislature imposed a head tax for each Chinese person entering Canada. The tax increased to $100 in 1901 and again in 1903 to $500.
  • In 1923, the federal government executed the Chinese Exclusion Act. This act did not permit people of Chinese origin to enter Canada. Many Chinese Canadians were separated from their family members in China, and some never saw them again.
