  • The Battle AtThe Salamis Strait
  • Overview : In 480 BC, the Greek naval fleets conquered the Persian fleets in the Battle of Salamis, despite being outnumbered, which resulted in a victory for the Greeks. In addition, this victory influenced the continuation of the defeat of Persia and elimination of Persian invasions.
  • 480 B.C.
  • The start of the Battle at the Salamis strait is actually influenced from the ending of a previous war between Persia and the Greeks: Thermopylae. The Persians were angry at being defeated by the Greeks and traveled south to Athens to attempt to burn down the city, but the Athenians had already evacuated their homes to safety.
  • Where are the Athenians?! We came here to get revenge after our defeat at Thermopylae, but they are all . . . gone?!
  • Themistocles, the leader of the Greeks at the time leading up to the Battle of Salamis, decided that the narrow geography of the strait would serve as an advantage to the Greeks. Themistocles successfully brought everyone out of Athens in preparation for luring the Persians into the Salamis strait. Themistocles's ideology was that because there were a fewer number of Greek troops, their ships were smaller than the Persians', so they would be better in navigating and defeating the Persian force in the strait.
  • Themistocles
  • Greek troops : there were only about 220 troops, thus they were heavily outnumbered by the Persian navy in battle.
  • Both troops traveled southwest to the strait from Athens. The Greeks were already stationed in the Salamis strait, and the Persians were making their way down from Athens to meet the Greeks in hopes of defeating them. The Persian leader, Xerxes, who commissioned the Persian invasion of Athens, sat watching the battle from ashore.
  • Persian troops : there were over 1,200 troops in the Battle of Salamis from Persia.
  • Thanks to Themistocles, we could successfully lure the Persians into the Strait and defeat them!
  • The Greeks had a decisive victory against the Persians in the Battle of Salamis, as their strategic planning of using the strait's narrowness to their advantage negated the small number of troops they had. They were able to burn, sink, and crash all of the Persian ships within the strait.
  • This battle altered the course of the war and the history of Persia and Greece because it proved that the Greek city-states could successfully sort out their differences and form an alliance to defeat the intruding powers of Persia. It also proved that the democratic system of Greece could eliminate the autocratic power of King Xerxes, and is regarded as the turning point for the end of the Persian War and the formation of the Delian League.
  • We won! I knew we could defeat the Persians once again!
  • Aww man . . . I really thought we were going to win this time . . .
  • King Xerxes
