  • This is Gina
  • Hello! My name is Coby and today we will be speaking about a person named Gina. This is her as a baby!
  • Gina's Journey
  • I had to go through endless meetings and watched as schools put unreal goals on Gina without doing anything to help.
  • Throughout school, Gina and her mother struggled very hard to get her the rightful education that she deserved.
  • The Problem
  • How was your experience when meeting with the schools?
  • Absolutely dreadful. The administration had a fixed mindset that prevented Gina from flourishing. It was a daily struggle, fighting against a current of programs that were not helpful to Gina.
  • Gina was born with Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome (SLOS) which is a genetic disorder. A person with SLOS does not have the enzyme that converts 7-DHD cholesterol into cholesterol. High levels of 7-DHD cholesterol is harmful to the body and can have adverse effects.
  • Fixing the Problem
  • Well here are some things teachers can do in the future to help parents of children like Gina:
  • 1. Teacher's can listen more to parents input and help speak up for parents who are making important education decisions about their children.
  • Gina's mother fought really hard throughout Gina's schooling on modifying and changing programs to fit Gina's needs. Hard work paid off and Gina excelled in classes. There are many programs that Gina and her mother developed for the schools to use.
  • Changing Attitudes
  • 3. Teachers should not judge or alter expectations of a student based on performances in previous classes or impairments. Have realistic expectations!4. Be active about current programs for students with disabilities. If there is something that needs to be changed or altered, teachers should notify administration and parents about these changes.
  • Teachers and administration had unhelpful attitudes when teaching and deciding on what should be done about Gina. A lot of programs were not fit for her and schools focused on the negatives of Gina. However, some schools were open for change and listened to Gina's Mother's suggestions.
  • Final Thoughts
  • Teachers need to actively listen to parents' concerns because they have extensive knowledge about their own child. Teachers should work with parents to schedule and make sure these meetings about their children are genuinely interested in parents' input.
  • 2. Make classrooms more differentiated to help a multitude of students. This can help students like Gina have more opportunities to excel and learn.
  • Teachers should not lower expectations and hinder a student from learning based on biases and prejudice. Teacher's should be aware of negative mindsets to prevent hindering a student's learning. Teachers should also help parents by being active in the child's learning. Teachers can do this by being more aware of a students progress and how effective programs are.
  • Thankfully, Gina's mother loved her very much and tried as hard as she could to make sure that Gina would get a fair education. It was a tough process and it is not done. Gina's mom is not done fighting and will continue to help Gina throughout her journey.
  • As teachers, we should strive to help parents' voices, like Gina's mother, be heard. As educators, we must support their involvement in their children's education.
