  • In the 1920s people bought household goods on credit or paying a small portion of the money while paying the rest using monthly payments. This was the first time many Americans used credit for everyday items. Some examples of those goods include refrigerators and toasters. What other examples can you spot in the picture?
  • The most expensive good bought on credit was automobiles. Gas stations, repair shops, motels, restaurants and car part factories were created as a result. The automobile became more affordable for the common American after Henry Ford used the assembly line to make automobiles faster.
  • This family borrowed too much money and were not able to pay their bills. They did not account for interest in their budget. Their house was foreclosed on and they had to find somewhere else to live. People not paying their bills led to businesses not being able to pay employees and laying off millions of workers.
