  • The 13 colonies finally had enough and declared Independence from Britain in 1776.
  • The Revolutionary War lasted from 1775-1783. The French helped the 13 colonies beat the British. One of the key leaders of the war was George Washington.
  • This is Washington crossing the Delaware River in a famous battle.
  • Well what happened after that?
  • The 13 colonies finally became the United States of America! They decided that they needed a constitution and the Articles of Confederation was formed.
  • What was the purpose?
  • The purpose was to create a national government composed with a Congress. It had the power to declare war, sign treaties, make alliances. The states had instead of congress had the power to tax.
  • This was a set up for a very weak government.
  • The most powerful men in the country came together to create a more perfect union. It created the bicameral government. It set up checks and balances that keep America in balance.
  • Constitution 
  • Alexander Hamilton called for all states to be represented during the convention that was supposed to amend the Articles of Confederation. They instead decided to change how the government was set up.
  • Many people worked on the Constitution however James Madison is credited with writing it. On June 21, 1788 the Constitution became official when New Hampshire was the 9th state out of 13 to ratify it.
