- In the 2019-2020 school year, 7.3 Million students in the United States of America public schooling system received IEP services.
- This week in reading Gina's story, I've come to learn a lot of things. In hearing how Gina was treated throughout multiple situations during her schooling years, it's hard to not want to become more involved in forming a better system for students like her.
- An important way to keep parents involved in their child's life is to keep a collaborative environment with other parents open and inviting for them.
- A good way to create this environment is for schools and teachers to host parents nights where they could mingle and discuss learning environments in an open forum.
- Of the 20.9 million families reporting at least one member with a disability, 5.5 percent have both adults and children with a disability.
- It's important to also offer emotional support for both students and parents. We as teachers have to realize that this is also a learning experience for parents, and they also need safe spaces to express their emotions.
- Another way that we can support parents and their children with disabilities is encouraging their success instead of focusing on their unmet goals. It would also help to create individualized goals for the student, instead of just trying to stick to an overall standard.
- Out of 72.3 million families included in the US Census Bureau Report, about 2 in every 7 reported having at least one member with a disability.
- The last and most important way to keep parents involved is through parent/teacher/administration communication. The best way to keep everyone active in the situation is to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands what is going on.
- An estimated 2.8 million families, 1.3 percent, reported raising two or more children with a disability.
- It's important to keep in mind not only the students with disabilities that we teach, but also their parents and families that we interact with as well. We can keep everyone actively engaged with community support.
