  • Narcissus was the son of the Boeotian river (Cephissus) and a nymph (Liriope). He was extremely handsome and praised for his looks everywhere he went, but he himself saw no beauty in others and was frustrated because of it (he yearned for love). It was prophesied that he would live a long and fulfilling life unless he came to know himself (his narcissism).
  • Echo was a nymph who was cursed by Hera to only be able to repeat the last words that escaped others. She saw Narcissus travelling through the woods and, falling in love with him, began to make chase. Narcissus called for her, but it was difficult for them to locate one another because she kept repeating only his call. Once they found each other, Narcissus rejected Echo, leaving her devastated. She wept her physical form away while she pined for him until nothing was left of it but her voice, which became one with the woods.
  • Narcissus, distraught and desperate for love more than ever before, ran up to a river where he thought he noticed an impossible beauty. He came up closer to it and, overjoyed that he finally found his love, kissed the river's waters. But his kiss only turned to ripples, and he realized in that moment that he was staring at himself. He realized that his lack of love for anyone else was because of his own impossibly high standards. and with that his fate was sealed. His promise of a long and fulfilling life crumbled to dust as he wasted away by his reflection, starved of affection. What remained of him became the Daffodil flower, which blooms in spring.
