- We are introduced to our main character Liesel. She had just lost her brother to sickness which killed him. She had to attend a funeral for him which was held in the city in which he died. She stayed by the grave after everyone left to mourn her brother’s death. While she was walking away though she found a book that was named The Grave Digger’s Handbook. She read the book to
- Liesel finally arrives at her foster home. Her foster father is Hans Huberman who was one of the most influential figures in her life. Her mother was Rosa Huberman who was a very strict foster mother to Liesel. Both of her parents were very protective of Liesel.
- Liesel mat Ilsa Herman while she was collecting laundry for her mother. Ilsa was nice enough to let Liesel inside her home while she got the laundry. Liesel was astounded once she walked in her house, seeing the ceiling tall shelf of books. She was so astonished that Ilsa let her stay a little bit to admire the books.
- Max arrived. At first Liesel was confused about why there was a random man in her house for no apparent reason. She ended up becoming very good friends with Max and bringing him gifts while he got very sick and wouldn’t wake up. This shows her big connections to Max.
- Max had to try to hid from the Nazi soldier that was searching their house. The Nazi soldier did this to look for basements that were suitable in case there was a bombing of the city. This was a very high possibility during this time in Nazi, Germany. Their house ended up being turned away due to it being to shallow for the surface.
- Liesel was downstairs writing her book when there was suddenly a huge crash coming from above. She was really scared because she didn’t know what to do. She ended up learning that Molching was bombed on while she was in the basement. She was the only one in her foster family to survive the bombing.
