- Tess is the antagonist of this story in the 1870's in Southern England. She is 14 years old, beautiful, and very innocent until it is stolen from her.

- Rising Action
- Tess's family is revealed to be of an ancient noble descent of an upper class family. Tess accidentally kills her families horse which takes her to seek help from the wealthy d'Urbervilles where she is dishonored and harassed by Alec d'Urberville.

- Tess's husband Angel discovers that she has been touched by Alec and decides to leave her. He goes off to Brazil and doesn't answer to a single one of Tess's letters leaving her in despair.

- Conflict
- Tess is seduced, impregnated, and then abandoned by Alec. Her baby dies few days later leaving her in despair. This leaves her unacceptable to her lover Angel.

- Falling Action
- Last minute, Tess decides to not marry Alec after he claims he loved her so much to care for her family. Angel returns from Brazil to discover the marriage between Tess and the man who had abused her. Tess murders Alec and escapes with Angel before she is caught.

- When Tess and Angel arrive to Stonehenge, Tess goes to sleep. In the morning a search party is sent out to look for Tess. They find her and she is sent to jail and executed for killing Alec.
