  • Hello there. I am a time traveler. I traveled to Siddharha’s house to teach you abou the origins of Buddhism.
  • Siddharha decided to spend his life searching for religious truth and an end to life suffering. Or search for Enlightenment -a state in which one understands the universe.
  • I’m sick of being inside. I now realize that a religious life is the happiest.
  • Siddharha wandered through the forest of India searching for wisdom. He tried many different things like fasting and debating religious thinkers.
  • One day he decided to meditate under the Bodhi tree. After 49 days he understood the suffering of this world. From then on he was known as the Buddha.
  • The Buddha gave a sermon to his five companions. In that he made 4 steps to understand his enlightenment. These were called the FourNobelTruths - they are the foundational teachings of Buddhism. He also takes about the Eightfold Path- which was a guide to Nirvana- the release from suffering from suffering. The Buddha also accepted the ideas of reincarnation- or the rebirth of a soul into a new body.
  • These five followers became the first monks in the Buddhist religious order. When spreading there ideas to society many laborers and crafts people coauthor on because of the rejection of the Caste system - assigned duty’s from birth in Hinduism.
  • The monks wandered throughout India spreading the Buddha’s teachings. They were missionaries. Some of the monks became Bodhisattvas get a confirmation from a living Buddha that you will became a Buddha as well.
  • Buddhism was spread all throughout Eastern Asia through trade. The Silk Road allows the missionaries to easily travel to places like China, Korea, and Japan.
  • On these journeys the missionary’s doing them decided to document their travels. Creating the series of books called the Four journeys.
  • After the Buddha’s death, the practices of Buddhism split. Into TheravadaBuddhism- which teaches that the best path to Nirvana is a life in meditation as a monk. The other was MahayanaBuddhism- which teaches that only others can help you achieve Nirvana.
  • Today many monks still make pilgrimages to India to see the stupas which are mounds that hold the Buddha’s relics.
